THE KEY TO UNDERSTANDING
THE ENTIRE BIBLE. If
you understand that the Bible is written to show us how humanity was created
for God, fell into sin, was reconciled through Christ (who was the product of a
family) and God will restore everything through His sacrifice on the Cross;
then you have the message of the entire Bible.
2 Corinthians 5:17-21 17Therefore
if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away;
behold, all things are become new. 18And all things are of God, who
hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the

JESUS AND THE EARLY CHURCH
TAUGHT THAT THE ENTIRE OLD TESTAMENT TEACHES ABOUT JESUS. You can preach the Gospel
from ANY Old Testament book; just as well as you can the New Testament.
John 5:39-40 39You
study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal
life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, 40yet you
refuse to come to me to have life.
Luke 24:44-47 44He
said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you:
Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the
Prophets and the Psalms." 45Then he opened their minds so they
could understand the Scriptures. 46He told them, "This is what
is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47and
repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all

Acts
18:24-28 24Meanwhile a Jew named
Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was a learned man, with a

the way of the LORD, and he spoke with great fervor and taught about Jesus
accurately, though he knew only the baptism of John. 26He began to
speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they
invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately. 27When
Apollos wanted to go to Achaia, the brothers and sisters encouraged him and
wrote to the disciples there to welcome him. When he arrived, he was a great
help to those who by grace had believed. 28For he vigorously refuted
his Jewish opponents in public debate, proving from the Scriptures that Jesus was
the Messiah.
Acts 13:13-39
13 From Paphos, Paul and his companions
sailed to Perga in Pamphylia, where John left them to return to
Jerusalem. 14 From Perga they went on to Pisidian
Antioch. On the Sabbath they entered the synagogue and sat down. 15 After the reading from the Law and
the Prophets, the leaders of the synagogue sent word to them, saying,
“Brothers, if you have a word of exhortation for the people, please speak.”
16 Standing up, Paul motioned with his
hand and said: “Fellow Israelites and you Gentiles who worship God, listen
to me! 17 The God of the people of Israel chose our
ancestors; he made the people prosper during their stay in Egypt; with mighty
power he led them out of that country; 18 for
about forty years he endured their conduct in the wilderness; 19 and he overthrew seven nations in
Canaan, giving their land to his people as their inheritance. 20 All this took about 450 years.
“After this, God gave
them judges until the time of Samuel the prophet. 21 Then the
people asked for a king, and he gave them Saul son of Kish, of the
tribe of Benjamin, who ruled forty years. 22 After
removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning
him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will
do everything I want him to do.’
23 “From this man’s descendants God has
brought to Israel the Savior Jesus, as he promised. 24 Before
the coming of Jesus, John preached repentance and baptism to all the people of

completing his work, he said: ‘Who do you suppose I am? I am not the one
you are looking for. But there is one coming after me whose sandals I am
not worthy to untie.’
26 “Fellow children of Abraham and you
God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation has been
sent. 27 The people of Jerusalem and their rulers
did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of
the prophets that are read every Sabbath. 28 Though
they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him
executed. 29 When they had
carried out all that was written about him, they took him down from the
cross and laid him in a tomb. 30 But
God raised him from the dead, 31 and
for many days he was seen by those who had traveled with him from Galilee to
Jerusalem. They are now his witnesses to our people.
32 “We tell you the good news: What God
promised our ancestors 33 he has fulfilled for us, their children,
by raising up Jesus. As it is written in the second Psalm:
“‘You
are my son;
today I have become your father.’

34 God raised him from the dead so that he will
never be subject to decay. As God has said,
“‘I
will give you the holy and sure blessings promised to David.’

will not let your holy one see decay.’

ancestors and his body decayed. 37 But the one whom God raised from the
dead did not see decay.
38 “Therefore, my friends, I want you to know
that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. 39 Through
him everyone who believes is set free from every sin, a justification you
were not able to obtain under the law of Moses.
II.
THE BOOK OF HOSEA.
A.
THE AUTHOR OF HOSEA. The Bible appears to
identify Hosea as the author, even though the information is presented in the
third person.
Hosea 1:1 1The word
of the LORD that came to Hosea son of Beeri during the reigns of Uzziah,
Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and during the reign of Jeroboam son
of Jehoash king of Israel:
B.
WHAT DOES THE NAME HOSEA MEAN? His name means,
“salvation.”
A.
HIS MINISTRY WAS TO THE NORTHERN KINGDOM OF ISRAEL. Israel ignores the prophets sent to the nation and
eventually the nation is destroyed by the Assyrians (even though there are
descendants of the old nation that survive until this day, i.e., the
Samaritans).

HE LIVED DURING THE SAME TIME AS ISAIAH, MICAH AND AMOS.

HE HAD TWO SONS AND A DAUGHTER. Even his children were a prophetic sign to the people of
God.

he married Gomer daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a son. 4Then
the LORD said to Hosea, "Call him Jezreel, because I will soon punish the
house of Jehu for the massacre at Jezreel, and I will put an end to the kingdom of Israel. 5In
that day I will break Israel's bow in the Valley of
Jezreel." 6Gomer conceived again and gave birth to a daughter.
Then the LORD said to Hosea, "Call her Lo-Ruhamah (which means "not
loved"), for I will no longer show love to Israel, that I should at all
forgive them. 7Yet I will show love to Judah; and I will save them-not
by bow, sword or battle, or by horses and horsemen, but I, the LORD their God,
will save them." 8After she had weaned Lo-Ruhamah, Gomer had
another son. 9Then the LORD said, "Call him Lo-Ammi (which
means "not my people"), for you are not my people, and I am not your
God.

WHAT IS ITS PURPOSE OF THIS
BOOK? To
show that in spite of the unfaithfulness of God’s people; God is yet loyal.

WHAT IS THE MESSAGE OF
HOSEA?
1.
HOSEA’S DOMESTIC LIFE IS PROPHETIC (Hosea 1-3).
Hosea 1:2 2When
the LORD began to speak through Hosea, the LORD said to him, "Go, marry a
promiscuous woman and have children with her, for like an adulterous wife this
land is guilty of unfaithfulness to the LORD."
Hosea 3:1-5 1The
LORD said to me, "Go, show your love to your wife again, though she is
loved by another man and is an adulteress. Love her as the LORD loves the
Israelites, though they turn to other gods and love the sacred raisin
cakes." 2So I bought her for fifteen shekels of silver and
about a homer and a lethek of barley. 3Then I told her, "You
are to live with me many days; you must not be a prostitute or be intimate with
any man, and I will behave the same way toward you." 4For the
Israelites will live many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or
sacred stones, without ephod or household gods. 5Afterward the
Israelites will return and seek the LORD their God and David their king. They
will come trembling to the LORD and to his blessings in the last days.
2.
ISRAEL HAS BEEN UNFAITHFUL TO GOD (Hosea 4-13).
Hosea 4:1-6 1Hear
the word of the LORD, you Israelites, because the LORD has a charge to bring
against you who live in the land: "There is no faithfulness, no love, no
acknowledgment of God in the land. 2There is only cursing, lying and
murder, stealing and adultery; they break all bounds, and bloodshed follows
bloodshed. 3Because of this the land dries up, and all who live in
it waste away; the beasts of the field, the birds in the sky and the fish in
the sea are swept away. 4"But let no one bring a charge, let no
one accuse another, for your people are like those who bring charges against a
priest. 5You stumble day and night, and the prophets stumble with
you. So I will destroy your mother- 6my people are destroyed from
lack of knowledge. "Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you
as my priests; because you have ignored the law of your God, I also will ignore
your children.

A CALL TO REPENTANCE (Hosea 14).
Hosea 14:1-2 1Return,
Israel, to the LORD your God. Your sins have been your downfall! 2Take
words with you and return to the LORD. Say to him: "Forgive all our sins
and receive us graciously, that we may offer the fruit of our lips.

JESUS IN HOSEA.
Hosea 11:1 1"When
Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.
Matthew 2:13-15 13When
they had gone, an angel of the LORD appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get
up," he said, "take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt.
Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill
him." 14So he got up, took the child and his mother during the
night and left for Egypt, 15where he stayed until the death of
Herod. And so was fulfilled what the LORD had said through the prophet:
"Out of Egypt I called my son."
III.
THE BOOK OF JOEL.
A.
THE AUTHOR OF JOEL. The text appears to
identify Joel as the author; even though the information is presented in the
third person.

B.
WHAT DOES THE NAME JOEL MEAN? It means, “the LORD is
God.”

JOEL’S MINISTRY WAS TO THE SOUTHERN KINGDOM OF JUDAH. His message was one of judgment and restoration.
2.
JOEL VIEWS NATURAL AND MANMADE DISASTERS AS A SIGN OF
GOD’S JUDGMENT. They were warned that if they did not get
right, then worse would come. Unfortunately it eventually did.
a.
LOCUSTS. This
completely shattered the economy. But, there was yet a promise of restoration.

locust swarm has left the great locusts have eaten; what the great locusts have
left the young locusts have eaten; what the young locusts have left other
locusts have eaten.

the LORD was jealous for his land and took pity on his people. 19The

enough to satisfy you fully; never again will I make you an object of scorn to
the nations. 20"I will drive the northern horde far from you,
pushing it into a parched and barren land; its eastern ranks will drown in the
Dead Sea and its western ranks in the Mediterranean Sea. And its stench will go
up; its smell will rise." Surely he has done great things! 21Do
not be afraid, land of Judah; be glad and rejoice. Surely the LORD has done
great things! 22Do not be afraid, you wild animals, for the pastures
in the wilderness are becoming green. The trees are bearing their fruit; the
fig tree and the vine yield their riches. 23Be glad, people of Zion,
rejoice in the LORD your God, for he has given you the autumn rains because he
is faithful. He sends you abundant showers, both autumn and spring rains, as
before. 24The threshing floors will be filled with grain; the vats
will overflow with new wine and oil. 25"I will repay you for
the years the locusts have eaten- the great locust and the young locust, the
other locusts and the locust swarm- my great army that I sent among you. 26You
will have plenty to eat, until you are full, and you will praise the name of
the LORD your God, who has worked wonders for you; never again will my people
be shamed. 27Then you will know that I am in
Israel, that I am the LORD your God, and that there is no other; never again will
my people be shamed.

FOREIGN INVADERS. The
natural locust invasion, was just a prophetic sign that Babylon was coming to
invade Judah.

ASTRONOMICAL SIGNS. These
signs were not just regarding Judah. But, signs of the last days.
Joel 2:30-32 30I
will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and billows
of smoke. 31The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood
before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD. 32And everyone
who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved; for on Mount Zion and in
Jerusalem there will be deliverance, as the LORD has said, even among the
survivors whom the LORD calls.
D.
WHAT IS ITS PURPOSE OF THIS
BOOK? God
is calling Judah to repent of her sins. She is the people that God has chosen
to produce our Savior through. However, Judah sins and judgment will come. But,
God will restore and pour out His Spirit.

THE BOOK OF AMOS.

THE AUTHOR OF AMOS. As with the other two
books we have studied, the text appears to cite Amos himself as the author; even though the information is
presented in the third person.

THINGS ABOUT AMOS?

HE WAS A SHEPHERD AND A FARMER. Even though he was from Judah, he also ministered to the
Northern Kingdom of Israel.

HE WAS A CONTEMPORARY OF ISAIAH AND HOSEA.
D.
WHAT IS ITS PURPOSE OF THIS
BOOK? Even
though Israel has forsaken God, God is showing mercy by sending Amos to send
the message that they had an opportunity to repent.
E.
WHAT IS THE MESSAGE OF AMOS?
His
message is that the fire of God’s judgment is coming. Amos has an international
ministry; so his prophecies pertain to many nations. This is exemplified in
Amos referring to it as fire:

But I will send a fire into
the house of Hazael, which shall devour the palaces of Benhadad.

ISRAEL DOES NOT MEET GOD’S STANDARD; AMOS IS OPPOSED
(Amos 7).

7 This is what he showed me: The Lord was
standing by a wall that had been built true to plumb, with a plumb
line in his hand. 8 And the Lord asked
me, “What do you see, Amos?”

replied.
Then the Lord said,
“Look, I am setting a plumb line among my people Israel; I will spare them no
longer.
9 “The high places of Isaac will be
destroyed
and the sanctuaries of Israel will be ruined;
with my sword I will rise against the house of Jeroboam.”

JESUS IN AMOS (Amos 8-9). When the Messiah comes in the Second Coming, he will
restore God’s people to their rightful place.

ANOTHER PROPHECY ABOUT THE MINISTRY OF JESUS CHRIST.

it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD God, that I will cause the
sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day:

V.
PRAYER FOR SALVATION. As we close, if you have not received this
Jesus pray this simple prayer:
"Father, I know that I
have sinned against You. Please forgive me. Wash me clean. I promise to trust
in Jesus, Your Son. I believe that He died for me—He took my sin upon Himself
when He died on the cross. I believe that He was raised from the dead. I
surrender my life to Jesus today.
"Thank You, Father, for Your gift of
forgiveness and eternal life. Please help me to live for you. In Jesus' name,
Amen."
