Bible Doctrine (Soteriology)

By Bishop Elijah H. Hankerson III, BA, MA, DD

GOLDEN TEXT.

1 Timothy 4:16 16Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee

LESSON NOTES:[1]

I. WHAT DOES SOTERIOGY MEAN? Soteriology comes
from the Greek word (Sotereo) meaning salvation.

II. WHAT DOES SALVATION MEAN? It is the application of the work of redemption to the sinner and his restoration to divine favor and communion with God.

III. REPENTANCE A NECESSITY. This redemptive operation of the Holy Spirit upon sinners is brought about by repentance toward God which brings about Conversion, Faith, Justification, Regeneration, Sanctification, and Baptism of the Holy Ghost.

A.   REPENTANCE IS A GIFT. God chooses us.

B. REPENTANCE — The work of God which results in a change of mind in respect to man's relationship to God.

Matthew 3:1-2 In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near."

Matthew 4:17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near."

Acts 20:21

Mark 6:12

Luke 24:47

Acts 2:38; 11:18;26:20

2 Peter 3:9

Luke 13:5

Revelation 3:19

IV. IMPORTANT TERMINOLOGY. The above redemptive terms and supporting scriptures are as follows:

V. JUSTIFICATION—The judicial act of God in which He, on
the basis of the righteousness of Jesus Christ, accepts that all the claims of the law as being satisfied with the respect to the sinner.

Romans 5:1-10 1Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our LORD Jesus Christ, 2through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. 3Not only so, but we also glory in oursufferings, because we know that suffering  produces perseverance; 4perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5And hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. 6You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might
possibly dare to die. 8But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him! 10For if, while we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!

Romans 3:25, 28, 30

Galatians 2:16

Philemon 3:9

2 Corinthians 5:21

1 Corinthians 1:30

A. WHAT DOES JUSTIFICATION DO? The following points should be-noted carefully:

(1)          Justification removes the guilt of sin and restores the sinner to all filial (Son and Daughter) rights as a child of God.

(2)         Justification takes place outside the sinner and does not change his inner life.

(3)         God declares the sinner righteous.

VI. FAITH — A certain conviction wrought in the heart by the Holy spirit, as to the truth of the Gospel and a heart trust on the promises of God in Christ.

Romans 1:17 For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed-a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith."

Romans 3:28 For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law

Matthew 9:22

Acts 26:18

Romans 4:5

2 Corinthians 5:7

Ephesians 2:8

Hebrews 11:6-7

James 5:15

1 Peter 1:5

Galatians 3:23-25

Hebrews 10:38

John 2:11; 3:16, 18; 36; 4:39; 14

Romans 10:14

Galatians 2:16

Philemon 1:29

VII.CONVERSION — That act of God whereby He causes the regenerated sinner, in His conscious life, to turn to him in repentance and faith.

2 Kings 5:15

2 Chronicles 33:12-13

Luke 19:8.9

John 9:38; 4:29, 39

Acts 8:30; 10:44; 9:5; 16:14.

VIII.REGENERATION —That act of God by which the principle of the new life is implanted in man, and the governing disposition of soul is made holy and the first holy exercise of this new disposition is secured.

A. THE TOTAL PERSON. In principle this regeneration experience affects the whole man:

1.   INTELLECT

1 Corinthians 2:14-15 14The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. 15The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments,

2 Corinthians 4:6 For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God's glory displayed in the face of Christ.

Ephesians 1:28

Colossians 3:10

2.   THE WILL

Psalm 110:3 Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth.

Philippians 2:13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.

I Thessalonians 3:5

Hebrews 13:21

3. FEELINGS OR EMOTIONS.

Psalm 42:1-2 1As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. 2My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

1 Peter 1:8

IX. SANCTIFICATION AND BAPTISM OF THE HOLY GHOST- (separate lesson)

X. PRAYER FOR SALVATION. As we close, if you have not received this Jesus pray this simple prayer:

"Father, I know that I have sinned against You. Please forgive me. Wash me clean. I promise to trust in Jesus, Your Son. I believe that He died for me—He took my sin upon Himself when He died on the cross. I believe that He was raised from the dead. I surrender my life to Jesus today.
"Thank You, Father, for Your gift of forgiveness and eternal life. Please help me to live for you. In Jesus' name, Amen."
